Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Miami Marlins in exchange for minor league infielder Bryson Brigman and International Slot Money.
To make room on Seattle's Major League, 40-man, roster, the Mariners have transferred RHP Dan Altavilla to the 60-day disabled list. Altavilla was originally placed on the 10-day DL on June 8 (retro to 6/7) with a right elbow UCL sprain.
Maybin, 31, hit safely in 47 of 99 games with Miami this season, including 13 multi-hit games and 3 games with 3 hits. He is batting .251 (63x251) with 20 runs scored, 12 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 20 RBI, 32 walks and a team-leading 8 stolen bases. The 6-3, 215-pound outfielder has batted .309 (21x68) in the month of July and has hit safely in 12 of his last 17 games started (7/1-c). The Marlins signed Maybin as a free agent on Feb. 22, 2018.
Maybin is a 12-year Major League veteran with the Detroit Tigers (2007 & 2016), San Diego Padres (2011-14), Atlanta Braves (2015), Los Angeles Angels (2017), Houston Astros (2017) and Miami Marlins (2008-10 & 2018). He was originally selected by the Tigers in the 1^st round (10^th overall) of the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of T.C. Roberson High School (Asheville, NC), where he was named North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005 and set a North Carolina high school record with a .662 batting average in his senior season.
Over his 12 Major League seasons, Maybin has hit .255/.323/.369 (859x3373) with 486 runs, 146 doubles, 32 triples, 59 home runs, 307 RBI, 322 walks and 172 stolen bases. In 2017, he tied a career-high with 10 home runs and recorded 33 stolen bases, the 2^nd-most of his career, in a season split between the Angels (93 games) and the Astros (21 games). Maybin played in 6 postseason games with the Astros, batting .286 (2x7) with a walk, 2 runs scored and a stolen base. After entering Game 2 of the World Series as a defensive replacement, he singled, stole 2^nd base and scored on George Springer's go-ahead home run in the 11^th inning.
Brigman, 23, hit .304 (116x381) with 47 runs scored, 13 doubles, 7 triples, 2 home runs, 38 RBI, 37 walks and 15 stolen bases in 98 games with High-A Modesto. He is currently tied for the California League lead in hits (116), while also ranking T3rd in triples (7), 4th in games played (98), 5th in average (.304), 6th in on-base percentage (.373) and T12th in stolen bases (15).
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound infielder has played 286 career minor league games between Short-A Everett, Low-A Clinton and High-A Modesto, combining to hit.265 (294x1109) with 153 runs scored, 33 doubles, 12 triples, 4 home runs, 93 RBI, 122 walks and 48 stolen bases. Brigman was selected by Seattle in the 3rd round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of San Diego. He was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 40th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Valley Christian (CA) High School, but did not sign.
