SEATTLE -- General manager Jerry Dipoto added another contender to the Mariners' rebuilt bullpen on Tuesday, signing veteran right-hander Joel Peralta to a one-year Minor League deal with an invitation to big league camp.
The 39-year-old went 3-1 with three saves and a 4.34 ERA in 29 innings for the Dodgers last year while spending nearly half the season on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder from April through June and a neck sprain in August. He allowed just two runs with 11 strikeouts and no walks over his final nine innings after rejoining the club for the final month and threw a perfect inning in his lone appearance in the National League Division Series.
The Dodgers declined a $2.5 million option on Peralta, making him a free agent.
The Dominican native was a big part of the Rays bullpen from 2011-14, averaging 67 innings and 74 appearances with a 3.58 ERA, 1.054 WHIP and 293 strikeouts in 269 1/3 innings.
Peralta has pitched 11 seasons in the Majors with the Rays, Royals, Dodgers, Nationals, Rockies and Angels and has a career 3.94 ERA and 1.149 WHIP in 589 relief outings.
Dipoto had already brought in a number of veteran relievers on Major League deals, signing free agents Steve Cishek, Justin De Fratus and Ryan Cook and trading for Joaquin Benoit, Evan Scribner and Jonathan Aro.
Mariners pitchers and catchers report to Peoria, Ariz., for physicals on Feb. 19, with the first workout on Feb. 20. Position players report on Feb. 24, one day before the first full-squad workout under new manager Scott Servais.
