College righty Costa to Nats in 13th round

With their 13th-round selection, No. 406 overall, the Nationals on Saturday picked right-hander John Costa of Palm Beach State College.

Costa made just three appearances last year in his only season at the Florida community college. He was 1-0 and had 14 strikeouts in 13 innings.

Before attending Palm Beach State College, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder played one season at Florida International University. In 22 appearances, he was 2-2 with 38 strikeouts and a 6.00 ERA. Costa attended Sumitt Christian High School in Lake Worth, Fla., where he lettered for four years and was named the Florida small school Player of the Year in 2011. He went 9-1 with a 2.52 ERA and pitched a complete-game six-hitter in the state semifinals during his senior year.

Costa was drafted by the Orioles in the 31st round of the 2011 Draft.
