O's August moves haven't materialized ... yet
BALTIMORE -- When the Orioles traded away six key players in July, there was an expectation that the club's roster purge would continue into August. But that hasn't been the case.
There's issues for several potential candidates from the O's. Mark Trumbo is currently on the disabled list, Adam Jones could invoke his 10-and-5 rights -- as he did at the non-waiver Trade Deadline -- and Andrew Cashner and Alex Cobb -- who have both reportedly cleared waivers -- haven't generated much interest. The Orioles were unable to trade Danny Valencia earlier this month and ended up releasing him.
"We've got, what, five days?" Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "It's just like the other Deadline, people don't really show their hand until right at the end. It might be the same thing here. But usually this time of year things are affected by health.
"I was talking to [Orioles general manager] Dan [Duquette] today about some things that he's looking into and thinking about, but you can have something with a club that you think really should match up and is great, and you call them and [say] 'Here it is,' and they go, 'No.' It's just as simple as that."
Outfielder Craig Gentry could be useful on a contending club for his speed and defensive capabilities. But the O's would have to get a deal done before the Deadline in order for Gentry -- or any other player -- to be eligible for a postseason roster spot.
Baltimore had a massive overhaul in July, dealing Manny Machado, Zach Britton, Kevin Gausman, Jonathan Schoop, Brad Brach and Darren O'Day as it begins a rebuild.
"We traded some really good players, so there's been a lot of movement," Showalter said. "I don't want to know and [Duquette] doesn't need to tell me [everything going on]. I've got my hands full here. But there's a lot of things I'm sure are going on and close or not close. It doesn't help anybody to know all that stuff.
"I can't really handicap between now and the end of the month. I know for our guys who are here who might be involved in that, personally, I'd love to see them, if they're going to be traded, get there before the first [of September] so at least they're eligible for the postseason. But that doesn't mean somebody still won't take them to try to get there."
