O's add lefty LeBlanc to rotation mix

February 4th, 2020

BALTIMORE -- Looking to add to an already-crowded competition for several rotation jobs, the Orioles agreed to terms on a Minor League contract with veteran left-hander , the team announced Monday.

The deal, which was first reported by ESPN, will be worth $800,000 if LeBlanc makes the team out of Spring Training.

An 11-season big league veteran with seven teams, LeBlanc went 6-7 with a 5.71 ERA in 26 appearances (eight starts) for the Mariners in 2019. The 35-year-old is one year removed from a solid campaign in 2018, when he compiled a 3.72 ERA and was among the American League’s top 10 starters in walks per nine.

LeBlanc showed similar command but had far different results on contact last season, which he began in Seattle’s rotation before transitioning to the bullpen. Twelve of his 18 relief appearances came as the bulk innings pitcher behind an opener.

LeBlanc is 45-47 with a career 4.46 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across 234 games (114 starts) for the Padres, Marlins, Astros, Angels, Yankees, Mariners and Pirates.

In Baltimore, he’ll get a chance to win a starting job in what should be a wide-open competition for the Orioles’ rotation. All-Star will arrive at camp as the staff ace, with veteran righty slotting in behind Means if fully recovered from hip surgery.

After that? LeBlanc joins a back-end mix that also includes , recently signed and No. 11 prospect . Rule 5 Draft picks and and the returning are expected to get long looks as well.

Sources indicate that LeBlanc, who pitched exclusively as a reliever in 2017 with Pittsburgh and predominately out of the bullpen last season, turned down offers elsewhere for the chance to start in Baltimore. There is also the chance the Orioles add another veteran starter from the free-agent market before pitchers and catchers report to Sarasota, Fla., on Feb. 11.
