The Major League Baseball Players Association’s executive board voted unanimously Wednesday to appoint Bruce Meyer as the interim executive director, one day after Tony Clark resigned after more than a decade as union head.

The executive board is composed of 72 Major and Minor League players elected by their teammates to two-year terms.

Meyer joined the MLBPA as senior director of collective bargaining and legal in 2018, getting promoted to deputy executive director in 2022. He led the union’s negotiating team on the 2022 Major League Basic Agreement, the 2020 agreement as well as the 2023 Basic Agreement for Minor League Players.

Prior to joining the MLBPA, Meyer was a senior advisor at the NHLPA and a partner at the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges. Meyer will continue to act as the MLBPA’s chief negotiator for the union’s next Basic Agreement, which expires in December of this year.

Matt Nussbaum, who had been the MLBPA’s general counsel, was also elected unanimously to replace Meyer as deputy executive director. Nussbaum has been with the union since 2011.

Clark resigned from his position on Tuesday, but the executive board didn’t hold a vote to elect his replacement until Wednesday.
