NEW YORK -- Trent Grisham made an early exit from Friday’s game against the Padres, one inning after the Yankees' center fielder was unable to track down a Xander Bogaerts run-scoring single that fell in front of him.
Grisham got a late start on Bogaerts’ two-out flare facing Max Fried in the second inning, which fell as San Diego scored the first run of the evening.
At the conclusion of the frame, Grisham entered the dugout and immediately approached an athletic trainer, disappearing down the tunnel toward the clubhouse area.
Grisham, who is batting .211/.308/.395 with 18 homers and 59 RBIs in 121 games, dealt with a strained right hamstring in mid-June that sent him to the injured list until early July.
A two-time Gold Glove Award winner, Grisham’s defense has slipped this year. Entering Friday, Grisham had tallied -7 defensive runs saved, tied for second worst among qualified Major League center fielders. His -6 outs above average rank last at the position.
Heliot Ramos replaced Grisham for the third inning, moving to right field as Spencer Jones switched to center field.
