Baseball is meant for young and old alike. After all, from a child playing tee-ball for the first time to a baseball lifer who has been a fan for decades, the game has been passed down from generation to generation in all its glory.
While our national pastime transcends age, sometimes you see it in a more literal fashion than others. That’s what happened during Tuesday night’s contest between the Mariners and Red Sox at Fenway Park.
After Boston starter Jedixson Paez was hit hard for eight runs on 10 hits over 3 2/3 innings, reliever Wyatt Olds was summoned from the Red Sox bullpen.
The first batter Olds faced was Young. As in, Cole Young.
As generations collided at Fenway -- not really, since Young is 23 years old and Olds is 27 -- Olds struck out Young. The two faced off again in the sixth, and this time, Young flied out to deep center field.
You know what they say: You’ve got to respect your elders. Even if Olds is only four years older than Young.
