The Yankees have addressed their need at catcher a few days after Monday’s Trade Deadline.
New York has signed veteran catcher Mitch Garver to a Minor League deal, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Friday. The club has not confirmed the move.
The right-handed hitting Garver, playing in his 10th Major League season, recorded a .175/.302/.294 slash line with four home runs in 50 games with Seattle before the club released him on Tuesday.
A Silver Slugger winner in 2019 with the Twins, Garver hit 19 homers and logged a 138 OPS+ in 87 games with the 2023 Rangers. He has finished with a sub-100 OPS+ in each of his three seasons with the Mariners since.
Catcher was a priority for the Yankees leading up to the Deadline, but they were unable to find a match to add one. Their backstops, led by the lefty-hitting Austin Wells, rank tied for 27th among all clubs in batting average (.191) and 28th in OPS (.567) this season.
