Cards sign 17 picks in 2023 Draft
Below is a list of every player drafted by the Cardinals.
Each club had until 5 p.m. ET/2 PT on Tuesday, July 25, to come to terms with its Draft selections. If a player had exhausted his collegiate eligibility, he could've signed at any time up until one week prior to the next year’s Draft.

Draft-and-follow picks -- high school and junior college players selected after the 10th round who attend a two-year college after the Draft -- can sign with their selecting teams for up to $250,000 up until a week prior to the following year’s Draft.
Players drafted from Round 11 on do not count against the bonus pools unless their signing bonus exceeds $150,000; any amount over that total will count against the pool.

According to MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis, Davis signed for the full slot value. He also took batting practice July 15 at Busch Stadium. Davis, who hit 21 home runs while batting .362 as a junior at Arizona this past season, smashed a handful of long balls into the empty seats between games of the split doubleheader between the Cardinals and Nationals. Cardinals assistant GM and director of scouting Randy Flores said Davis will head to St. Louis' complex in Jupiter, Fla., on July 16 where the team will evaluate his readiness before determining at what Minor League level he will start his professional career.
3 (90): Travis Honeyman, OF, Boston College

As reported by MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis, Honeyman signed for $700,000 with the Cardinals on July 14 -- $59,600 below value for his slot in the Draft. The outfielder hit .304 with an OPS of .917 this past season at Boston College while adding six home runs and 30 RBIs. His season was cut short by a shoulder injury that played a role in him dropping to the third round of the Draft.
4 (122): Quinn Mathews, LHP, Stanford

As reported by MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis, Mathews signed for $600,000 on July 14. The left-hander became the talk of the baseball world in early June when he threw 156 pitches in a complete-game, 16-strikeout win over Texas in the NCAA Super Regionals. Mathews, who set the Stanford school record with nine saves in 2022, was 10-4 this past season with the Cardinal.

Levenson signed for $381,300 -- the amount he was slotted for -- on July 14, per MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis. Levenson, who is projected as a corner outfielder at the professional level, hit .292 with an OPS of .951 this past season with the University of Miami. He smacked 14 home runs and drove in 45 runs in 63 games with the Hurricanes.

The Cardinals signed the Virginia Tech reliever, per MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis. Worley, who pitched just 36 2/3 innings in three college seasons, landed $200,000 from the Cardinals, per Callis. Worley, who has a low-90s fastball and a mid-80s slider and had a 14 strikeout-per-nine innings ratio in college, will report to the team’s complex in Jupiter, Fla., in the coming days where he will be evaluated to determine the level at which he will begin his pro career.

How bonus pools and pick values work
Each choice in the first 10 rounds comes with an assigned value, with the total for a club's selections equaling what it can spend in those rounds without incurring a penalty. If a player taken in the top 10 rounds doesn't sign, his pick's value gets subtracted from his team's pool. Clubs near the top of the Draft often spend less than the assigned value for those choices and use the savings to offer more money to later selections.
Teams that exceed their bonus pool face a penalty. Clubs that outspend their allotment by 0-5 percent pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. At higher thresholds, clubs lose future picks: a first-rounder and a 75 percent tax for surpassing their pool by more than 5 and up to 10 percent; a first- and a second-rounder and a 100 percent tax for more than 10 and up to 15 percent; and two first-rounders and a 100 percent tax for more than 15 percent.
