Pagan homers for first time since 2014

DENVER -- Angel Pagan knocked his first home run of the season -- and 50th of his career -- into the right-field seats at Coors Field on Saturday to lead off the third inning and give the Giants a two-run lead in a game they went on to win, 7-3, ending a seven-game losing streak.

It was Pagan's first home run in 698 at-bats, dating back to May 2, 2014, during the first game of a doubleheader in Atlanta, but he downplayed the significance of the drought.

"I'm not here to hit home runs," Pagan said. "I'm here to help the team win somehow. I'm always trying to go up there and do my best. I'm not here only to contribute offensively. Sometimes it's going to be a rough night at the plate, but I can still save the game defensively."

The only home run of the Giants' losing streak was Ryan Vogelsong's first career roundtripper on Thursday in an 11-3 loss.

Pagan hit a career-high 11 homers with the Mets in 2010 and had gone a year without one just once, in 2008, when he played only 31 games at the big league level.

"If I finished the year with zero home runs, it wouldn't make a difference," he said. "I wouldn't feel bad."

Entering play Saturday, Pagan led all National League players in at-bats without a homer, with 696. Rounding out the top five were Pete Kozma (Cardinals, 514), Kyle Lohse (Brewers, 507), Michael Bourn (Braves, 503) and Tim Lincecum (Giants, 474).
