Giants conclude 2nd day of 2012 First-Year Player Draft
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The San Francisco Giants finished day two of the 2012 First-Year Player draft with selections in rounds two through 15.
Throughout the first 15 rounds, the Giants drafted seven pitchers, two catchers, two infielders and four outfielders. San Francisco chose 12 college players, two junior college players and one from high school.
In the second round of today’s draft, San Francisco chose right-handed pitcher Martin Agosta out of St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California with the 84th overall selection. In 14 starts, the junior led the Gaels going 9-2 with a 2.18 ERA (25er, 103.1ip) and 95 strikeouts, as his 9 victories were the most by a St. Mary’s starter since 1991. The 6-1, 180-pound righty was named to the First Team All-West Coast Conference squad in both his sophomore and junior seasons. The 21-year-old is a native of Northern California out of Sacramento, where he attended Jesuit High School and was a teammate of Andrew Susac, the Giants second round pick from last season.
In the third round of today’s draft, the Giants selected outfielder Johnathan “Mac” Williamson out of Wake Forest University with the 115th overall pick. In 2012, the 21-year-old, redshirt junior hit .286 (55-for-192) with 42 runs scored, seven doubles, 17 home runs and 52 RBI in 52 games. The 6-4, 240-pound right-handed hitter was named to the 2012 First-Team All-ACC Team. The Wake Forest, North Carolina native’s 17 home runs led the ACC in conference play. Williamson was also selected in the 46th Round of the 2011 draft by the Boston Red Sox, but chose to return to Wake Forest for another season.
With the 148th pick in the fourth round, San Francisco selected left-handed pitcher Steven Okert from the University of Oklahoma. The 6-3, 210-pound college junior posted a 3.26 ERA (25er, 69.0ip) with 65 strikeouts in 23 appearances this season. The 20-year-old was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after becoming the first pitcher in the Big 12 to beat Baylor this season. The Rowlett, Texas native currently ranks eighth in wins (6) and saves (3) in the Big 12, as the team advances to the Columbia Super Regional. Last season, he was named honorable mention All-American, All-Region and All Conference while playing at Grayson County College.
The Giants chose left-handed pitcher Ty Blach from Creighton University with their fifth round, 178th overall pick. The 6-1, 200-pound junior fashioned a 2.69 ERA (35er, 120.1ip) with a team-leading 83 strikeouts in 21 appearances this season. The 21-year-old was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week in 2012. In 2011, the Colorado native was named Missouri Valley Conference First Team Scholar-Athlete, MVC Second Team, CoSIDA Academic All-America and MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
