Southpaw showdown: Top 100 prospects White, Smith live up to billing at Triple-A

On an otherwise ordinary mid-April night at the ballpark, two of the sport's up-and-coming left-handers offered up a glimpse of the near future in real time.

Neither disappointed.

Thomas White (MIA No. 1/MLB No. 14) and Hagen Smith (CWS No. 4/MLB No. 64) went toe-to-toe at Triple-A on Thursday, seemingly feeding off each other while making pointed statements about their readiness for The Show.

White struck out eight over four frames for Jacksonville while Smith allowed one hit over five innings for Charlotte. Both pitchers had completed a good night's work before the Jumbo Shrimp rallied to a 5-3 win over the Knights at Bragan Field at VyStar Ballpark.

For White, it was a return to the Minors' highest level after a pair of rehab starts for Single-A Jupiter. MLB's top-ranked lefty pitching prospect had missed most of the spring after suffering an oblique strain during his Grapefruit League debut on Feb. 26. White proved up to the challenge, topping out at 96.3 mph and generating 13 whiffs on 36 pitches (36 percent).

The 21-year-old, who averaged an eye-popping 14.6 K/9 in 21 starts last season, punched out seven across his first three frames, including three in the second inning. The only true blemish on White's line was a second-inning solo homer by Drew Romo, who also nicked him for an RBI single -- an unearned run -- in the fourth.

Walks were an issue for the Massachusetts native in 2025 -- White walked 51 in 89 2/3 innings -- but he did not issue any free passes against Charlotte, throwing 47 of his 72 pitches for strikes.

While White had the strikeout pitch working, Smith also excelled when it was his turn on the bump, something he's done consistently through his first four starts of 2026. The fifth overall pick in the 2024 Draft was on point from the jump, limiting Jacksonville to a single and a pair of walks across five innings while throwing an efficient 59 pitches (39 for strikes).

Smith matched his season high with five K's for a third consecutive start, giving him 19 strikeouts in his first 13 innings this year. Like his counterpart, the Arkansas product struggled with his command in 2025, averaging 6.7 BB/9, but Smith was precise on Thursday, tossing three perfect innings before working in and out of trouble in the fourth.

Although limited by early-season pitch counts, the 22-year-old has yet to allow more than a run in any of his outings and sports a 1.38 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP through the early going.

That neither pitcher factored into the final outcome was besides the point.

If this duel was any indication, their paths will undoubtedly cross in the not-too-distant future. Only next time, the stage might be a whole lot bigger.
