CC finished for the year with hamstring strain

Yankees left-hander injured in Friday's win over Giants; will end season with 14-13 mark

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia's season, which the Yankees left-hander has called the most frustrating one of his career, is over.

The Yankees announced on Monday that Sabathia was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring, an injury that the team said requires approximately eight weeks of recovery time. As a result, Sabathia will be unable to take the mound until next season.

Sabathia, 33, apparently sustained the injury during his most recent start on Friday, when he held the Giants to a run on seven hits over seven innings in a 5-1 victory. After the start, Sabathia gave no hints that he was injured, saying that his outing had been important to keep the Yanks alive in their chase of a playoff spot and that he intended to take the ball for his next turn.

"It means a lot, but I've got a start in five days and I'll be ready for that one," Sabathia said that night.

The Yankees entered Monday four games back of the Indians for the second American League Wild Card spot, with six games remaining on their schedule. Manager Joe Girardi has acknowledged that the club must win all six games to have any chance of qualifying for the postseason, a task they'll now have to tackle without Sabathia.

Sabathia completes the season, his fifth with the Yanks and the 13th of his big league career, with a 14-13 record and a career-high 4.78 ERA in 32 starts. He has suggested that his heavy career workload could be having some impact on his pitching.

A six-time All-Star, Sabathia won the 2006 AL Cy Young Award and has pitched 2,775 1/3 innings in 415 starts with the Indians, Brewers and Yankees.
