Nothing minor about Yankees pitching

May 5th, 2021

Now that's how to impress on Opening Night.

A trio of Yankees pitching prospects shined in their 2021 debuts, led by Luis Medina, who recorded eight of his 12 outs via the strikeout for High-A Hudson Valley. Luis Gil and Matt Sauer rounded out the triumvirate, which combined to surrender no runs on four hits with 20 punchouts over 11 innings.

Medina had it working from the first pitch for Hudson Valley, which began its affiliation with the Yankees with a 6-2 loss to Jersey Shore. The No. 7 Yankees prospect struck out five of the first eight batters he faced and allowed only one hit, a single by Rudy Ross leading off the second inning. Although Medina dealt with traffic in three of his four innings, the 22-year-old was able to work around two walks, two wild pitches and a hit by pitch during his 67-pitch outing. The right-hander ended his 2021 debut with a pair of strikeouts.

Signed as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic as a 16-year-old in 2015, Medina struggled overall in 2019, finishing 1-8 with a 5.47 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 22 starts, numbers largely skewed due to 70 walks. He did, however, average better than a strikeout per inning, fanning 127 in 103 2/3 innings.

While Medina was dealing in Lakewood, Gil was doing the same for Double-A Somerset, which blanked visiting Harrisburg, 6-0, in the franchise's first-ever affiliated game. New York's fifth-ranked prospect needed 63 pitches to complete 3 2/3 innings, but left the game having allowed a pair of hits and a walk with six punchouts, including three of the first four batters. Buoyed by a five-run first inning, Gil retired six consecutive hitters to open the game before allowing two runners in the third and another in the fourth before being lifted.

The 22-year-old owns a 2.69 ERA in 63 Minor League appearances, including 47 starts, while averaging 11.53 strikeouts per nine.

Not to be outdone was Sauer, who made only his third start since the end of the 2018 season. The No. 26 Yankees prospect allowed one hit, struck out six and walked three during his 3 1/3-inning debut for Low-A Tampa, which defeated Dunedin, 11-7. Sauer worked around a base-on-balls in each of his first three frames and departed after notching a strikeout on his 54th pitch.

A second-round pick in the 2017 Draft, Sauer made two starts in 2019 before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
