The recipients of the 2019 Yankees-Stonewall scholarships will be announced and introduced on Wednesday, May 22 at 3:00 p.m., at The Stonewall Inn. The announcement will be made during a speaking program which will include Yankees President Randy Levine, Yankees Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Cashman, Yankees Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager Jean Afterman, Yankees Senior Vice President of Corporate/Community Relations Brian Smith, The Stonewall Inn Co-Owner and Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative CEO Stacy Lentz, Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education Richard Carranza and First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray.

The initiative commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn Uprising and celebrates the achievements of New York City Public School graduating seniors who have demonstrated academic achievement, a commitment to equality and impactful support for the LGBTQ community.

The Yankees-Stonewall initiative will provide $50,000 worth of scholarships through five $10,000 college scholarships to be presented to one student from each of the five boroughs of New York City. The scholarships — which will be awarded on an annual basis — will allow the scholars the resources to launch their educational and career goals. The nomination process was initiated by the New York City Department of Education with each public high school able to submit one graduating senior for selection.

On April 10, a Yankees-Stonewall Scholars panel consisting of representatives from the New York City Department of Education and The Stonewall Inn reviewed applications and narrowed the candidate pool to approximately two dozen students — evenly distributed from each of New York’s five boroughs. On April 29-30, these students met with the panel, which selected one scholarship recipient representing each borough. The panel conducting these interviews consisted of representatives from the New York Yankees, New York City Department of Education, The Stonewall Inn, the Office of the Mayor and the NYC Unity Project, which is First Lady Chirlane McCray’s citywide initiative to support and empower LGBTQ young people.

Yankees-Stonewall scholarship recipients will be highlighted at Yankee Stadium during a pregame commemoration on Tuesday, June 25, prior to the Yankees’ 7:05 p.m. game vs. Toronto. This commemoration will recognize the impact and contributions of the greater LGBTQ community and shine a spotlight on the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising along with WorldPride 2019, which is taking place in New York in June. Joining in the on-field festivities will be representatives from the LGBTQ community, The Stonewall Inn, New York City Department of Education, NYC Office of the Mayor and the NYC Unity Project.
