Mariners acquire catcher Welington Castillo from Chicago Cubs in exchange for RHP Yoervis Medina

BALTIMORE - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today the club has acquired catcher Welington Castillo from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Yoervis Medina.

The Mariners will make a corresponding 25-man roster move when Castillo reports to the Mariners.

The Mariners will make a corresponding 25-man roster move when Castillo reports to the Mariners.

Castillo, 28, has appeared in 24 games (8 starts) with the Cubs this season hitting 2 home runs and recording 5 RBI. Behind the plate he has allowed just one stolen base in 64.0 innings.

In parts of 6 Major League seasons with the Cubs (debuted in 2010), Castillo has appeared in 310 games and combined for a .252 (254x1006) batting average with 29 home runs and 110 RBI. From 2013-14, Castillo combined to bat .255 with 42 doubles, 21 home runs, 78 RBI and a .716 OPS in 223 games. He has thrown out 58 of 220 attempted base stealers in his career (26.4%), including 47 of 171 in 2013-14 (27.5%), the 8th-best percentage in MLB during this two-year stretch.

Castillo has spent all 11 of his professional seasons in the Cubs organization after signing as a non-drafted free agent on December 8, 2004.

Medina, 26, was 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA (4 ER, 12.0 IP, 7 BB, 9 SO) in 12 appearances with the Mariners prior to being optioned to AAA Tacoma on May 3 (post-game). In three seasons with the Mariners posted a 10-9 record with 2 saves and a 2.82 ERA in 141 relief appearances.
