Phrase of the Week

Get to know proper baseball lingo! Each week we will teach you a new popular baseball phrase that you can use in or out of Busch Stadium! You might even learn enough to be an announcer at the stadium like Professor U-Man!

  • Around the Horn : When the infield makes a double play - starting with the ball being hit to the third baseman, who throws to second base for the first out and finally to first base for the second out.
  • Chin Music : A pitch that comes in high and inside.
  • Dead Ball : Action is stopped because play has been interrupted by a fan, player, piece of equipment ā€¦ etc.
  • K : The letter used to describe a strikeout. A forward K means a swinging strikeout, while a backwards K means a called third strike where the batter didn't swing.
  • Pickle : Players caught in a rundown.
  • Spoil a Pitch : When the pitcher throws a strike, but the batter fouls it off in order to get more pitches.
  • Yakker : Curve ball
  • 5 O'Clock Hitter : A player who hits well at batting practice, but not during the game.
  • In the Hole : The third player waiting to bat
  • Flashing the Leather : When a player makes a great defensive play
  • Utility Player : A player who can fill many different positions on the field.
