Suspended Phillies OF Rojas undergoes season-ending UCL surgery

June 21st, 2026

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies outfielder underwent season-ending surgery to repair a tear in his right UCL on Friday.

The procedure came a little more than a week after the club first announced that Rojas would require the surgery after feeling elbow discomfort while ramping up to return from his suspension. The 25-year-old outfielder was serving an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the league's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension began at the beginning of the 2026 season, putting a dent in Philadelphia’s already thin outfield depth. He appeared in 71 games in 2025, playing strong defense but struggling at the plate, where he hit .224 with a .569 OPS.

It's possible that Rojas could have factored into the Phillies' outfield plans down the stretch -- particularly with how the season has unfolded -- though he would have been ineligible for postseason play due to his suspension.

The Phillies came into the season planning to platoon Brandon Marsh and Otto Kemp in left field while starting Justin Crawford in center and Adolis García in right. That plan has hit a few snags, however, with Kemp struggling in his limited role before being optioned to Triple-A. More recently, García sustained a season-ending injury of his own.

The Phillies have since acquired Derek Hill from the White Sox and promoted prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. to help shore up the outfield.
