Baltimore City Residents Step Up to the Ballot Box at Camden Yards

October 27, 2020

Stepping up to the box at Camden Yards usually means hearing the roar of the crowd while public address announcer Ryan Wagner calls out the batter's name. But this time, it's your turn to step up to the box – the ballot box. And even though you won’t hear Ryan call out your name or thousands of Orioles fans cheering you on, millions of Americans are counting on you to step up. It's your voice. Your vote. Join us in making sure you are heard this election.

In support of the Orioles Voter Up campaign, Oriole Park at Camden Yards was recently announced as an early voting center for registered voters from Baltimore City, through an agreement with Baltimore City Board of Elections and the Maryland Stadium Authority. From now until Monday, November 2, any Baltimore City resident can vote early inside Dempsey’s Brew Pub and Restaurant, which will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. ET daily. Dempsey’s will also be open for Baltimore City resident to cast their vote on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Fans have already started making their voices heard by casting their ballots inside the iconic B&O Warehouse, as more than 1,200 people voted during the first day of early voting in Maryland on Monday.

The Orioles have also declared Election Day as a paid day off for all full-time staff. On November 3, employees are encouraged to vote and to volunteer to serve as poll workers or in a variety of other volunteer roles to help ensure safe, fair voting access throughout Birdland.

As part of the Orioles’ Empowerment Series and celebration of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, the Voter Up campaign aims to educate and encourage fans to register to vote and participate in the General Election. Over the past several months, the club has shared voter registration information, key deadlines, and additional resources with fans leading up to Election Day.

This includes the latest Empowerment Series vignettes, which showcase NIKKI CHARLSON, Deputy Administrator of the Maryland State Board of Elections (SBE), in a conversation with Orioles broadcaster MELANIE NEWMAN, who recently made history as the club’s first female play-by-play game announcer. The conversation explores the role of the SBE in the voting process, the importance of voting in the upcoming election, and how to support and celebrate women’s rights and girl’s empowerment.

Additionally, the Orioles Orange and Black Gives Back volunteer program, along with Orioles Women’s Empowerment Committee representative and Director of Field Operations NICOLE SHERRY, hosted a virtual event with Girls Inc. of Washington County to discuss the importance of voting.
