ARLINGTON -- Andrew Cashner couldn't stop the bleeding in his return to Texas.
The Orioles' right-hander, who made 28 starts for the Rangers last season, struggled in an abbreviated outing on Thursday. He allowed a career-high 10 runs on seven hits during a 17-8 loss to the Rangers at Globe Life Park. Cashner lasted just 1 2/3 innings, his shortest start of the season.
"I don't think I located all that well," Cashner said. "Wasn't finishing my pitches. I didn't really finish any of them. Just a lot of mistakes down the middle."
Cashner was backed with an early lead in the first inning. Jonathan Villar collected his first hit with the Orioles since landing with Baltimore on Tuesday in the Jonathan Schoop trade, then scored his first Orioles run on a Mark Trumbo groundout, but the Rangers answered quickly.

Jurickson Profar gave Texas the lead for good in the first, when he launched a three-run homer to right. Cashner allowed seven runs in the second, and each of the last five batters he faced reached base with two outs.
"He was just up. He was elevated from the get-go," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Everything, you could tell. There's such a fine line there. Two to three inches up is the difference in this level. We knew they were swinging the bats well and doing well offensively coming in."
Cashner's time with the Rangers last season proved to be a turnaround in his career. He won a career-high 11 games, and his 3.40 ERA was the ninth lowest in the American League.
That had the Orioles optimistic about what he could accomplish this year, but it has been a frustrating season for Cashner. His ERA rose from 4.33 to 5.05 during his start, and he's reached double-digit losses for the third time in his career.
Cashner, a Texas native, said he is always excited when he gets an opportunity to come back to his home state. But on Thursday, he couldn't get the best of his former team.
"It's home," Cashner said. "I love pitching here; it's just one of those days. I try to be the same guy every day. I don't try to get too up, too down. Just show up, keep working and keep grinding it out."
Trumbo hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and Caleb Joseph added a two-run homer in the sixth, but the Orioles weren't able to make up much more ground.

Baltimore has now lost 11 of its last 12 road games, and five of its last 10 overall.
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
With the Orioles trailing, 17-5, third baseman Danny Valencia made his first career pitching appearance in the eighth inning and struck out Joey Gallo. Baltimore had already used four relievers after Cashner's early exit, and Valencia said he told Showalter he was available if he was needed to pitch.
"I asked him. I was like, 'Hey Buck, just wanted to let you know, if you need an inning, I got you. Don't hesitate to ask,'" Valencia said. "Some guys don't want to do it, but [I wanted to] help the team, help the bullpen. I made it known early that, 'Hey, I've been wanting to throw an inning, two innings if we need it.'"

MARINEZ EXITS EARLY
Orioles right-handed reliever Jhan Marinez left the game in the fifth inning after sustaining a hamstring injury. Marinez went out to throw warmup pitches before the fifth, but he exited before facing the leadoff hitter. He allowed two runs on two hits and walked three in one inning of work. Miguel Castro replaced Marinez in the fifth, and Marinez is expected to undergo further evaluation on Friday.

Joseph launched his third home run off Rangers starter Yovani Gallardo in the sixth inning. Joseph has been hot over the past month: He's batting .333 (20-for-60) since July 1.

Right-hander David Hess (2-5, 5.94 ERA) will make his 10th start of the season at 8:05 p.m. ET on Friday at Globe Life Park. Hess last started on June 29 against the Angels, and he's 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA in five starts on the road. Texas will counter with righty Ariel Jurado (1-1, 4.22).
