O's select contracts of lefties LeBlanc, Milone

July 16th, 2020

A week or so out from Opening Day, the Orioles’ rotation is rounding into form. The club on Wednesday night selected the contracts of and , all but assuring it plans to include both veteran left-handers on its initial 30-man roster. Both pitchers were competing for spots in Baltimore’s rotation, and these transactions would seem to indicate both have earned roles there.

The Orioles’ 40-man roster now sits at 39 players.

All through Summer Camp, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde has declined to publicly announce his rotation behind Opening Day starter John Means, citing the unpredictability of the current baseball landscape. But the unit seems all but set: Means will be followed by veteran righty Alex Cobb and LeBlanc, with righty Asher Wojciechowski and Milone the top candidates to occupy the final two starts.

The Orioles could also interchange right-hander Kohl Stewart with Milone in the rotation, or use either in a swingman capacity. The club has been impressed with but seen little of Stewart, who signed a one-year, $800,000 contract last winter and was limited this spring due to a biceps issue. He is also a Type 1 diabetic and has been slower to recover after outings this summer, according to Orioles coaches. If the Orioles end up with Milone in the rotation over Stewart, it's because they see the veteran southpaw as more durable.

Means, Cobb and LeBlanc are scheduled to pitch in the club’s three exhibition games beginning Sunday at Philadelphia, and Means is penciled in on July 24 in Boston.

LeBlanc, 34, and Milone, 33, were both on Minor League deals after spending last season in Seattle, where they functioned as starters but often entered games in the first or second inning behind openers. LeBlanc went 6-7 with a 5.71 ERA in 26 games (eight starts), while Milone went 4-10 with a 4.76 ERA in 23 games (six starts).

Both have experience as both starters and relievers and at least nine years of MLB experience, and they own eerily similar career numbers.

LeBlanc is 45-47 with a 4.46 ERA in 234 career appearances (114 starts and 39 games finished) for the Padres, M’s, Pirates and four other teams. Milone is 50-47 with a 4.47 ERA in 174 games (136 starts and 8 games finished) for the Nats, A’s, Twins and three others.
