BALTIMORE -- Last July, when baseball’s best players convened in Washington for All-Star festivities,  stayed in Baltimore, arms distance from the Midsummer Classic but a world away. Mancini had slogged through a frustrating first half, and saw the break as an chance to “change my perspective on a few things.”

He spent the next four days trying to clear his head, hanging with Orioles superfan Mo Gaba, the young cancer survivor with whom Mancini has struck up a friendship.

“I had a lot of time to think about what was going wrong, what could be better,” Mancini told MLB.com. “I told myself, ‘I have to put this into action if I want to stay up here in the Majors.’”

Flash forward to the present day, and Mancini’s career trajectory has changed dramatically. A third of the way through his third big league season, Mancini is the prime candidate to represent the Orioles in this year’s All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. But to get there, he needs your help.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about it,” Mancini said. “Especially given where I was on a personal level a year ago. The All-Star break last year was kind of a turning point for me. ... To be in that game a year later would be incredible, and something I really couldn’t describe.”

Having lugged a .216 average and .655 OPS into last year’s break, Mancini has hit .289/.328/.512 with 22 home runs in 116 games since. That production has spiked this season, as Mancini hitting .305 with a .900 OPS and 10 home runs entering Tuesday, while pacing the Orioles in batting, OBP, SLG, runs, hits, doubles and fWAR – nearly every major offensive category.

“I’m on the Trey Mancini-for-All-Star train,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “I’m driving the bus. This guy is an All-Star in every way. He’s just had an amazing year. He’s such a class act, professional, plays hurt, wants to play every day. He’s swung the bat really well, drives in well, plays multiple positions. He’s had an All-Star-caliber year at this point.”

For Mancini, a trip to Cleveland would be “a dream come true.” And like many Orioles, it would be his first appearance in the Midsummer Classic. The same would be true for Jonathan Villar (second base) and Renato Nunez (DH), who are on the ballot and enjoying productive seasons for Baltimore. Pedro Severino’s offensive breakout also warrants consideration at catcher, and Chris Davis (first base), Rio Ruiz (third), Richie Martin (shortstop), Dwight Smith Jr. and Joey Rickard (outfield) are on the ballot as well.
