Orioles sign Guatemalan outfielder Montes

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles have signed Guatemalan outfielder Juan Diego Montes to a Minor League deal.

The signing, which has not yet been confirmed by the club, marks the O's second out of Guatemala. The 18-year-old Montes will join Andres Aguilar, who has played the past two years in the Gulf Coast League. The 19-year-old Aguilar, also an outfielder, hit .233/.263/.289 over 32 GCL games in 2013.

Under executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette, the organization has tried to expand its efforts in Latin America and beef up international scouting.

Montes, listed at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, will likely start his career with the GCL Orioles club.
