Markakis won't be placed on paternity list

BALTIMORE-- Nick Markakis' wife, Christina, is scheduled to induce labor for the couple's third son on Wednesday morning, and assuming all goes well, the Orioles' right fielder is planning on playing later that night.

"That's the way he's got it set up. We'll see," manager Buck Showalter said on Monday."It's one thing to induce. It's not like going to the dentist. I just hope everything goes well, and when he gets here, he gets here. I'm planning on him being an 'If' on Wednesday. I hope that happens and everything runs smoothly."

Markakis won't go on the paternity list with expanded rosters affording the club extra players and space if they need to make an additional move. Marred in the most prolonged slump on his career, Markakis -- who entered Monday's game with one homer and 10 RBIs in the second half -- was slated to bat leadoff against Yankees ace CC Sabathia.

Sabathia ended Markakis' season last year in mid-September after hitting him with an inside fastball, snapping the left-handed hitter's stretch of three consecutive seasons of at least 160 games played. The scuffling Markakis, who was not in Friday's starting lineup, has appeared in all but two of the Orioles' games this season and owned a .269/.323/.355 line entering play Monday.
